A self-imposed healthy eating plan over the last few months has put many foods out of our reach.
Due to spending too much time watching Diners, Drive Ins and Dives we keep craving big dirty sandwiches like the ‘Reuben‘.
Today we could stand it no longer so I tweeted the loaf and asked if they had baked any rye bread this morning. There were 3 options available but this dark rye loaf was so beautiful I had to choose it.
A Reuben consists of:
- Rye or Pumpernickel Bread
- Sauerkraut
- Russian Dressing (mine is mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish and paprika)
- Hot Pastrami
- Melting Swiss Cheese
- Optional Pickles
We sauced up both slices of bread, piled it all in, cheese on last, and put it under a very hot grill, topless.
It may not be worthy of a New York deli but it was a pretty damned good mid-week lunch.
One day we plan to cross the pond and try an authentic one.

We have a friend that just loves that show, so we end up watching it quite a bit. The Reuben is one of my favorites. Looks great.

I’d normally find rye too dark and heavy for me but in this sandwich it’s just the right thing.

Everyone loves a sandwich and our healthy eating has made this type of thing forbidden fruit. Also – Twitter has changed the game in so many areas hasn’t it? Made the world much smaller.

I used to eat Ruebens at a Jewish deli called Izzy’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. This American expat loves it here in the UK, but boy do miss The Rueben! Thanks for showing me how to make my own.

Came across your blog in a WP email and started reading your recipes (nothing I like better than a good sandwich unless it is a good sausage recipe!). As a yank that lived in the northeast (NY) area and had the real deal, you reuben sandwich sound delicious and the bread,.. well lets just say my mouth is watering. I’ll be stopping by again.

And before you all start mocking me for not knowing my sandwiches, yes I know in the States, a traditional ruben has corned beef not pastrami, but I have made and enjoyed it both ways.

Hi Pastor Tom and welcome to thingswemake. So glad you found us…and are partial to a delicious sandwich. I shall be making another American classic shortly: meatloaf followed by a meatloaf sandwich 🙂

My Grandma Nora would have loved your sandwich. The Reuben Sandwich was among her favorites. Memories of sharing a Reuben with her still bring tears to my eyes. I miss that amazing lady.
