Today’s post is about someone who made something for me.
Through the wonderful world of Twitter I recently came across Jacqui from Print for Love of Wood. I love Jacqui’s work and have spent a good while leafing through her Flickr photos of antique letterpress machines and wood letters.
I have a fascination for print, and although it’s not something I ever specialised in, I enjoyed the times that I got involved with it. From screen printing at school then through all sorts of print methods at the University of Manchester and later, deep in the basement of Green Lane Art College in Derby.
I asked Jacqui to print me ‘Things We Make’ using wooden letters, as I love the quality and texture that they give.
I chose this 6 line antique typeface, not least because it has a great looking ‘g’ in it!
Jacqui drew up a couple of options for me for the Things We Make logo and I am really pleased with the result that you can see at the top of the page.
What’s great is that I also now have the ‘Things You Make’ logo ready for the new sister blog that will be coming soon. My aim is that it will be a place to show off some of the things you all make too.
I particularly like this block of text that I can use in the sidebar, plus the option to make a stamp of the letters that I can use as a watermark on my photos.
Jacqui has such a busy life: working freelance, selling her prints, studying for her Graphic Design BA plus running a household with 3 kids too. She’s self-taught and prints on antique presses that she renovates herself. She only uses recycled paper and card and most of the inks are recycled from printers who are closing down, so it’s all very green as well as delightfully traditional.
I’m so pleased Jax managed to find the time to do this for me. Click here for the post that Jacqui wrote.

I love the letterpress logo and all the fab prints Jaqui creates… I have never done any printing other than lino cut printing which I always end up in a state with 40 plasters on my abused fingers… I am in love with the look of letterpress letters and drawers and would love to have a play with some… have a class in letterpress or something similar…. we should all make that fabulous Jacqui teach us for a day… we can all pay with food and cakes… just not those ugly ones i made.

That’s a fab idea Apryl. Jacqui will have to let us know if she is up for that some time.

I really like this, It’s great to know that this has been printed manually and then made digital, rather than just being digital to be made to look hand produced.
Looking forward the the new blog!

Thanks Rich, it’s got some sort of dimension when it’s printed hasn’t it? Still thinking about going white on the blog. Staying with black for now whilst I sort things out.

Apryl that sounds like fun, I am a sucker for cake ;D I’m looking into to doing some workshops early next summer when I’ve finished my degree, you’ll have to be my guinea pigs!
Thank you for the lovely comments about my work, so happy you all like the new logo!
