things{you}make

Today is the day we launch a ‘sister’ blog for things{we}make:

Although there are plenty of showcase sites for food and photos, we want to provide a visual showcase for the ‘makers’; people who create things for the love of it, for the need of a thing that money can’t buy, or to re-use an asset and make it more beautiful or useful.

We aim to select things that fit with the categories we have chosen to feature so far, items that we think other people will be inspired by, and also ideally have pretty good photos.

But they don’t have to be ‘beautiful’, just made by {you}

These are the categories:

  • Foody: Food related paraphernalia e.g. a meat curing chamber or a hot smoker
  • Garden: If it can go in the garden, it goes in here
  • House & Furniture: Hand crafted a table? Created a chair? Show it off.
  • Kids: Things created by kids or for kids…or big kids
  • Things: Miscellaneous ‘things’ we like from great graphics to cool little boxes
  • Tools: Handcrafted tools are a thing of beauty. Share them with us
  • Sculptural: Lovely sculptural things

This is what a post will look like:

You can also follow us on Twitter for updates as we will tweet about our favourite things{you}make from time to time, plus there is a ‘Tweet This’ button on each featured item if you want to share it with the world.

If you sell some of your things that’s great but we don’t want to have too many links to ‘selling’ sites. It’s about inspiration rather than cash.

We are not planning to feature too much general ‘crafty’ stuff unless it’s intriguing, unusual, or just darned useful. Also, for now, we are going to leave food pictures to the sites like FoodGawker and Tasteologie who do it so well.

So do you think you have something you might like to share?

All you need is a good photo and a few words to tell us what it is and how you made it.

  • Photo’s must be a maximum of 500 pixels wide
  • You don’t need to send us photos, just the URL from your photo sharing site or blog is best: On a MAC: right mouse click on an uploaded photo and use the ‘save image address’ on a PC: right mouse click on your photo>properties>image address (or something!)
  • There is space to link to a blogpost or site if you have one, but don’t worry if you don’t as we also want this to be for those who don’t want to venture into the world of blogging or selling
  • People will be able to comment on your items, and you can reply too
  • We hope that those who have blogs will see traffic as people come to see your work
  • If you have several things to offer, add them to our Flickr Group and we will select from there

Take a look at the site and let us know what you think, or if there is something that you have seen on the web that you think we should feature, let us know.

Let’s inspire more people to ‘make more stuff’
